Doctoral dissertation – What is it?

A dissertation is a work that qualifies for the award of an academic degree. The requirements for a dissertation differ depending on the course of study to which the applicant is applying. Let us find out what constitutes a  dissertation and what prerequisites need to be observed.

Differences between the doctoral candidate and candidate

A dissertation is a thesis that qualifies for a doctorate. Applicants with a Ph.D. can work on it. To obtain a doctorate, it is necessary to write and defend a thesis.

The doctorate is the third stage of academic training after the doctorate.

A special feature of the level: Applicants for doctoral studies must have recognized academic achievements in the corresponding field of knowledge.

In addition, it is assumed that a doctoral student must have “his school”.

If the dissertation confirms the applicant’s abilities (choice of topic, formulation of objectives, application of research methods), the dissertation confirms the applicant’s contribution to the development of science.

Requirements for the applicant

Requirements for applicants applying for a doctorate and the thesis itself:

  1. The results of the research must be qualified as academic achievement.
  2. The results of the practical application of the research results are required.
  3. Works, extracts and summaries that were previously published in specialized editions are admitted to the defence.
  4. Requirements for the number of publications: at least 15 for humanitarian disciplines, at least 10 for most other disciplines.
  5. Only applicants with a doctorate can apply for a doctorate.

Goals and objectives of scientific work

Working on a thesis begins with the formulation of objectives and objectives. How the applicant discloses the subject is up to you.

The goal determines the direction in which research and scientific work go. Typically, the goal is derived from the topic. This can be the description of a particular phenomenon or its properties and characteristics, the identification and fixing of patterns to summarize the development of a new direction.

Tasks are derived from the objective and are the components that must be disclosed to achieve the objective. A dissertation must have at least ten problems. Each subsequent task follows the previous one.

Characteristics of working on a dissertation

The existence of a new theory and method is a mandatory requirement for the content of a dissertation. The novelty must be justified, and the research results must be supported by reliable statistical data and a detailed description of the experimental component.

As part of the dissemination of the research topic and results, the applicant is encouraged to focus on the practical value of the methods developed. The minimum length of a dissertation is 200 pages without attachments and a list of sources.

Structurally, the dissertation comprises sections such as an introduction, the main part of several chapters, a conclusion, a bibliography and applications.

In addition, the applicant needs a package with the attached documents to present a thesis for the defence:

  • Abstract.
  • Send letter.
  • Thesis information sheet.
  • Completion of the thesis advisor.
  • Opinions of the official opponents, the opposition organization, the scientific advisor, the scientific advisor.
  • Regulated number of publications (by discipline).

As a defence, the applicant must also prepare a presentation and brochures. Immediately before the defence, the dissertation council members sign the attendance list, and receive handouts and a final draft.

All members of the Dissertation Council decide on the outcome of the dissertation in a secret ballot. If successful, the applicant will receive a new academic degree.

If the council decides not to accept the dissertation, the dissertation must be reviewed by the applicant and submitted for examination to the appropriate council of the higher certification committee. Based on the results of the examination, the applicant receives admission to the doctorate of his dissertation.
